One of their most important reasons is a tradition called Khayrul Qurun (lit. the best of eras). Relying on this tradition, they believe in the validity and genuineness of the understanding of the companions, their disciples and successors. Although the chain of transmission of the tradition cannot be challenged with their principles, the significations of the tradition is questionable since Bukhari and Muslim have abandoned the tradition with the wording "Khayrul Qurun" while Ahmad b. Hanbal admits that the true version of the tradition contains "khayrun naasi aqrani". The word "aqran" is the plural form of "qirn" which means "the likes". Thus, the hadith is not concerned with the generations of disciples. In fact, the tradition has another authentic chain of transmission which Muslim has mentioned in his Sahih. According to it, the tradition includes the fourth generation of disciples onward. Assuming that the companions, the disciples and their successors are the best, it does not mean that each one of them is the best of people. It signifies goodness of those in an inconspicuous and indefinite way. Even if they are presumably the best, it does not necessarily mean that their words and actions are authoritative; or else it will have ramifications which Salafists themselves will not stick to.}, keywords = {Salafism,Validity,Ibn Taymiyyah, understanding, noble predecessors, century, centuries,Khayrul Qurun}, title_fa = {بررسی دلالت حدیث خیر القرون در حجیت فهم سلف}, abstract_fa = {سلفیها مدعی هستند که باید بر اساس فهم سلف صالح، به تفسیر متون دینی از جمله کتاب و سنت پرداخته شود. This belief plays a critical role in many beliefs including interpretation of divine attributes in the Holy Quran. In his various works, Muhammad b. Salih al-Uthaymeen who is one of the contemporary prominent Salafi and Wahabi muftis, has denied the presence of metaphors rejecting the arguments of those who admit and accept them. Arguments such as a lack of figurative use of words by the predecessors and the permissibility of detaching verses from specific meanings are some reasons which have caused Ibn al-Uthaymeen to follow Ibn Qayyim in considering metaphor a kind taghut leading to distortion of the verses of the Quran and traditions whereas, in fact, the prophetic traditions and sayings of prominent Muslim scholars, who lived in the early period of Islam, are replete with metaphors and words used in their figurative meanings. Additionally, it is not true to say that there are no words in the Quran to be detached from their meanings as it will result in a contradiction. Moreover, the detaching of words from the meanings can lead to denial of the verses of the Quran only when it results in the negation of the real meaning while the permissibility of removing the figurative meaning is a sign of identifying the real meaning from the figurative one. It goes without saying that there are verses in the Quran which cannot be said to have been used in their real meanings, or else, the verses would give a wrong meaning. Ibn al-Uthaymeen's justifications have also not helped remove the error. They have taken recourse to different reasons which can be summed up into two explanations. First, they have made use of analogy (qiyas) in a way such that polytheists are the main group as compared to Muslims who are viewed as a secondary group. They extend to Muslims the rules which apply to polytheists. Second, they use du'a and its relationship with worship. These two explanations also apply to intercession and shirk of the polytheists are said to be because of worshipping their deities from whom they seek intercession. Since seeking intercession is a kind of request or du'a, it is therefore considered to be an act of worship and it is counted as deification of someone other than God. But these two explanations are faced with multiple problems because Muslims' behaviors are different from those of polytheists in three ways. The request made from an idol or to consider the intercessor (intermediary) as an independent cause and to worship him as a deity are the main differences of idolatrous and non-idolatrous practices. The second is also contradicted by the very fact that people turn to one another for help in their lives and also some companions sought help from the dead.
